An Emotional Moment when Rosenior Shatters Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is a top coach who knows the game inside out, and that's the crucial factor.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage player, it would be dishonest if I said this news doesn't move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who made his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea hired RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, 41, to be their new head coach following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also owns Chelsea.

Statistics show only twelve black managers – excluding individuals holding interim positions – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and played not far from here, he understands this community," continued Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters see a figure like Rosenior managing their club, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, who comes from a household that champions what's right… that's powerful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents a massive step for the club, for the capital, for all aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Exactly Do the Statistics Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea manager back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's first black manager.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering English black manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present top flight boss of colour.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game corresponds with a lack of diversity at executive level.

As per a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 study, 43% of Premier League footballers are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, analysis by Kick It Out revealed just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching positions, based on figures from eleven clubs, the percentage is two percent.

Across all coaching roles – including senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the figure is 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as the Chelsea manager, and we want to see more of that," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability present in the ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to striving to break those barriers once and for all."

Furthermore, Rosenior will become the fourth permanent British managers currently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which trails the continent's remaining major leagues regarding national representation.

Sixteen out of twenty top-flight coaches in Italy are from Italy, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, 12 of the 18 in Germany and 10 of the 18 are French.

Current Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every young English managers with a youth development pedigree will be, in some way regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It is truly inspirational to up-and-coming British academy coaches to witness someone land that job with that profile and we hope he will be highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint peaked with a brief stint in charge of then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for his services in combating discrimination within the sport and beyond.

After Liam retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He started penning articles for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that race does not influence ability and said opportunities should be given on merit.

He further expressed a point he would repeat: how vast lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse ethnic and cultural heritage.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" or "emotional", noting that he understood the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from Strasbourg to Chelsea in July.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and authored an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "blatant" prejudice.

He has subsequently built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye at Strasbourg earlier this week before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

The Blues boasted the Premier League's first African heritage boss in Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
