RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts down to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
