Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
